Blame it on the Mimosas. Our joint venture into the blog world was my idea. I came up with it while my girls and I were taking a break from unpacking my things.
Caroline*, Geneva* and I, these are aliases by the way, have been friends since we were students at the ivy in Elm City. In college we bonded over late night chats about men and our futures, marathon study sessions, Sade’s Love Deluxe, wine and yerba mate.
After school we all chose very different paths. I’m a Jersey native, turned honorary southern belle. After graduation, I grinded as a television reporter in the Big City South. After three years of working in the field and writing on the side, my writing career took a very profitable turn and now I’m blessed to be pursuing my passion full time. I moved into a Harlem loft with my boyfriend, who we’re calling Carter.
Caroline went to grad school and now works in marketing for a major cosmetics company. She is fierce. Think powerfully, sexy ‘Jaqueline Broyer’ in Boomerang, one of my favorite characters in cinematic history. And that’s what I love about her. She’s hard working, practical, and blunt. She knows what she wants out of life and she gets it; men, travel, success– you name it. She’s the wise sage of our group. And at the end of the day, she knows how to pop a bottle of champagne, toast to life, and just have fun.
Geneva is one of the most tremendously talented women I know. She has a huge soulful voice, packed in a curvy little body, and a spirit as carefree as her wild curly hair. She helps run a small theater in the city that puts on plays in the Black tradition. Art is her life. To know Geneva is to know that. At the theater she wears all hats—direction, production, sound, lighting… anything it takes to have an incredible show. She’s amazing at what she does. Sometimes she solos at little spots around town too. Geneva keeps us grounded. We can always count on her to make us laugh, until the point of tears, and then she’ll utter something deep and profound. She’s one of a kind.
The three of us are happily reunited since my return to the northeast and coincidentally we all live in different sections of Harlem. So lets get it poppin! I thought it’d be cool if three twenty-somethings, living uptown, candidly chronicled their lives; the ins and outs of love, career, family and social climbing- of course. Some of you will relate to our saga. Some of you will be shocked or nod in disbelief. I hope that at times you’ll laugh out loud.
We are sistas, sisters, and kindred spirits attempting to live our best, most fabulous life…and we’re doing so in one helluva city.
